JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH
In this remake, Brendan Fraser takes his nephew and a fellow archaeologist into the depths of the Earth. While it didn’t break any records, it still had eye-popping, 3D action that gave us a whole new perspective of the ground beneath us.

ARMAGEDDON
Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, animal crackers and Aerosmith. That’s ARMAGEDDON, in which civilization faces imminent doom due to a meteor. No one does action like Michael Bay, and really, who better to entrust the saving of the world to than Bruce Willis?

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW
Still an important message today, the effects of global warming is the cause of the onset of a new Ice Age here. Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal make up a great cast, but the true stars are the realistic special effects.

INDEPENDENCE DAY
So the aliens and the writing were cheesy, but this pro-America, pro-human, sci-fi movie was perfect parts action mixed with heart. Who didn’t cheer when Will Smith kicked some serious butt?

ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN
This sequel, in which our beloved characters must escape the melting ice of their home, highlights the real problem of today’s disappearing glaciers. Its light-hearted approach to a serious topic beats getting hit over the head with a “message” any day.

DEEP IMPACT
Much like ARMAGEDDON, DEEP IMPACT features the planet threatened by an enormous meteor. With a sharper eye on the science behind it all, this is a more serious look at what might actually happen if we were faced with such a situation.

WAR OF THE WORLDS
Cruiser is at his best in this Steven Spielberg’s remake about an army of people-zapping aliens. Terrifying, yes, but the taunt storytelling, realistic effects and standout performances make this a worthy flick about the end of the world.

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH
This documentary made no bones about its mission: with compelling evidence, it shone the light on our climate crisis. And surprise! People started paying attention, and a new generation of environmentalists and climatologists were born. Thanks, Al Gore!

PRINCESS MONONOKE
Hayao Miyazaki illustrates the suffering the environment due to human developments. While also an epic tale of swords and spirits, PRINCESS MONONOKE’s environmental theme is timeless and an important one to remember on Earth Day.

WALL-E
This animated masterpiece is a heart-warming love letter to Earth, and serves as an important lesson to viewers: treat the Earth with love and care, or else it will end up as a giant trash heap. As sweet as it is cautionary, WALL-E is one of Disney/Pixar’s best.
