Researchers were given a huge surprise recently when they discovered an enormous cluster of quasars (which are young active galaxies) stretching four billion light-years across!
It is a record breaking find because previously it was thought that clusters like this could only stretch about 700 million light-years across, so this discovery has researchers a little puzzled. According to their reserach the limit for any cosmic structure should be no bigger than 1.2 billion light-years.
This massive cluster, known as the Large Quasar Group (LQG), also contradicts the belief that the universe would look uniform from large scales. A reason for this could be the fact that the mathematical system used in these cases is overly simple and needs to be made more complex.
However, the LQG could solve some mysteries as well. For example, it could help us understand how and why our own Milky Way was created.
