It’s that time of year again: freshly sharpened pencils, brand new notebooks and butterflies in the belly. All this can only mean that it’s the first day of school!

Just because those long, luxurious days of sleeping in and no homework are over doesn’t mean the fun has to stop today. The start of schools means meeting new friends and reuniting with old buddies, experiencing exciting new subjects, teachers and fun activities for the year to come.

To help you get back into the swing of academic life, THE MAG has complied a list of 10 tips for your first week back:

  • Start your day off with a big, healthy and delicious breakfast. Be creative with your food by making a smiley-face using eggs, fruits and toast!
  • Try to pick out the clothes you’re going to wear the night before and make sure they’re clean, ironed and ready to be worn. This will make your mornings much less hectic. You can even pick a back-up outfit in case you spill something on your original choice, or if you change your mind.
  • Use an agenda and colourful pens and markers to stay organized. Keep track of your assignments and any upcoming tests. You can even jazz up your agenda with stickers and drawings!
  • Create a “homework nook” for yourself in a quiet place in your house where you can quickly and efficiently complete your daily assignments and study for tests. Keep your homework nook stocked with pencils, erasers, pens, paper and anything else you may need.
  • Get into the habit of spending time each evening looking over your schoolwork to make sure you understand everything. If there’s something you don’t understand, make a note of it to ask your teacher the next day to avoid confusion at test time.
  • Making new friends is one of the biggest perks of school, so don’t be afraid to chat with new students in your class; they’ll definitely appreciate your friendliness!
  • Set a goal (or two or three!) for yourself to be accomplished by the end of the year. This can be an improvement in your grades, to join a school club or sports team or even just to make as many friends as you can! Having a goal help you see that there is more to school than just books and learning.
  • If you make your own lunch, try to make sure you prepare and pack something yummy the night before so in the morning, you can just grab it and go!
  • Try to find all your classrooms before your first class there. This will help you avoid being late and making a bad first impression. If you’re new to the school, carry a map with you while you get acquainted with the building and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it!
  • Have fun! School is not supposed to be a chore, so try not to treat it as one!
