After being mystified for years, the residents of a small Irish town called Ballycastle have finally solved the mystery of their vanishing lake.
Loughareema Lake has a mischievous habit of disappearing at random and then reappearing when least suspected. With tits disappearing act and a spooky legend that tells of a Colonel who drowned wile crossing the lake at its fullest in 1898 and now haunts the lake, Loughareema Lake has become a bit of a tourist attraction.
The reason for the lake’s disappearance is due to the rock formations of the ground under the lake. With a base of limestone and a topsoil which had eroded, there is now almost a drain which leads to the porous limestone.
Like any other drain, when it is clogged, the lake is full, but as soon as it unclogs, the water drains away and the lake disappears!
Since learning the reason behind the vashining lake, the residents of Ballycastle have adapted to the strange natural wonder and have even created roads at a higher elevation for when the lake decides to return. However, they still like to spook tourists with the folklore of the haunted lake!
