What’s the difference between a stone and a meteorite? One can smash your roof in (without the help of man or a tornado.) That’s what a Norway couple learned real fast when they saw that a strange, large rock had smashed into the roof of their holiday garden cabin.
“We were there yesterday (Sunday),” Oslo resident Rune Thomassen said to VG Nett news team. He isn’t sure when the meteorite came through the roof of the cabin because the cabin was closed up for the winter season.
How common is it for a meteorite to smash into Norway? Since 1848, only 14 meteorites have been spotted in the Scandinavian country. The last one was spotted six years ago just south of Oslo in the town of Moss…so, kind of common but not really.
Astrophysicist Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard is predicting that the meteorite hit Norway sometime around March 1st since that’s when several meteorite sightings were reported in Norway.
“We took in hundreds of tips and have been searching for bits of meteorites,” Ødegaard explained after the discovery. “And then we find this right here in Oslo!” He elaborated that the discovery is very unique but not unusual since meteorites can travel between 360 to 1000km/hour.
First Mars, now this! It’s possible that if we can’t live in outer space, outer space will come to us…
