Monopoly fans across North America may soon bid farewell to one of the game’s iconic tokens as Hasbro tests a fresh rotation of the familiar pieces. The company invites players to participate by voting on the official Facebook page, signaling a move to keep the experience current for new generations in Canada and the United States alike.
Monopoly is inviting its Facebook followers to visit the page and cast a vote for their favorite token from a roster that includes the thimble, boot, battleship, the car, the top hat, the iron, the wheelbarrow and the Scottie dog. The token that finishes with the fewest votes will be retired from the board at the start of next month, making room for a fresh piece that resonates with today’s players.
Yet the change has a twist. As one token exits the board, a new piece will join the lineup. The set of potential additions remains under discussion, with candidates including a robot, a diamond ring, a cat, a helicopter or a guitar.
Hasbro notes that this isn’t Monopoly’s first negotiation with its tokens. The game has evolved through the decades, and in the 1950s the lantern, rocking horse and purse were retired and replaced by the wheelbarrow, horse and rider, and dog.
