Sunday Six: Fun Uses For Old Pennies

This past Monday the penny was officially out of circulation. Obviously we all have tons of pennies still sitting around waiting to be used. There are some options available, like rolling them up and taking them to the bank or donating them to a great cause. But if you want to save some pennies as a keepsake, here are some awesome ways you can do so!

6. Be creative: Use pennies to make cool earrings and necklaces that you can wear or give away to friends and family! If you’re not into jewelery, use the pennies to create unique artwork, like jazzed up photo frames! You can also add other coins, beads, buttons or knick-knacks to embellish your creation, or even just use the penny as your canvas!

5. Be green: If your garden is often invaded by pesky slugs, pennies are an awesome and safe way to protect your garden. Just plant some pennies around your garden and the copper in the pennies will keep all slugs at bay! Copper pennies can also help change the colours of certain flowers if buried under the plant by changing the pH level of the soil.

4. Dance: You don’t have to buy an expensive pair or tap shoes to tap like a pro! Just tape a penny to the bottom of your shoes for that tap-tap-tap when you walk, dance or run! You can even experiment with different numbers of pennies for the best sound, or just save a pile of pennies as replacement in case you lose the ones on your shoes.

3. Play games: Did you know that five pennies can replace a die? Heads counts as one and tales counts as zero. Pennies can also be used as replacement for lost tokens in board games or as replacement for lost checker pieces. You can even create a whole new original game using pennies and teach it to your friends and family!

2. Make wishes: keep a pile of pennies around in case you stumble on to a wishing well. Though there is no proven science behind wishing wells, if you have a bunch of pennies you’re not using, why not take a chance and make a few wishes? Just make sure there are no signs prohibiting this and make sure there are no fish or animals living in the well or pond where you plan to throw your pennies.

1. Preserve it: if you have a few pennies that are lucky, rare or just cool, why not preserve them forever? You can buy coin preservers in stores that will keep your precious coins safe and secure, but still easy to display if you so wish. Then, the penny can be carrier around for good luck or as a memento of a time past. If you wanted, you could frame a few of the pennies together from years that are significant to your and your family.
