Marissa Meyer, author of THE LUNAR CHRONICLES is no stranger to the world of fiction. With the recent release of the second book of the series, SCARLET, Marissa is winning over fans and building on the success of 2012’s CINDER. With the final two books, CRESS and WINTER on the way, we caught up with the young adult novelist to chat about the series, her favourite characters and upcoming surprises!
You recently released the second book of the series. Did you have the entire series completely plotted out from the beginning?
I knew which four fairytales I was going to be retelling and I had a basic idea of how the characters would connect to each other and how they would interact. That’s not to say that things didn’t change! It took me two years to write Scarlet, but I knew that I had written the best book I was capable of.
How would you describe Scarlet’s character?
Scarlet is a fireball! She doesn’t like to be told what to do and she doesn’t give a lot of forethought into things. It was a lot of fun to write about a character like that, but it does get her into trouble sometimes!
Which character do you identify with most?
I think the character that’s most like me is Cress, who is the main character of Book 3. She’s my Rapunzel, but instead of being stuck in a tower, she’s been stuck in a satellite orbiting Earth. She’s alone her whole life, so she has developed a crazy overactive imagination. She’s a little naïve, but super optimistic.
How does Cinder change and develop as a character in the second book?
At the end of Cinder, she learns a very important fact about her past. A lot of book two is about Cinder trying to find out more information, figure out where she came from, who she is and what she’s going to do with that information. She’s also developing new gifts and she has some cool new cyborg tools!
What surprises can we expect in the next book?
The third book will be the first time readers will get to meet the entire cast. I am excited about that because I love all the characters and I love seeing them interact.
Do you ever think about having your books made into movies?
I would love, love, love them to be made into movies! We are negotiating with a studio right now. They seem very enthusiastic about it, so I have my fingers crossed!
Would you ever write in a different genre other than science fiction?
I am going to be moving around genres, but I plan on staying in YA… One series I am considering is an action-adventure. I have ideas all over the board and I hope the readers like them as much as the LUNAR CHRONICLES!
Thank you, Marissa Meyer!
