The HARRY POTTER series has dominated the movie and book scene, and now it’s about to own the world of theatre, too! J.K. Rowling, the author of the books, is co-producing a play about Harry’s life before attending the magical school, Hogwarts!
The play is set to “explore the previously untold story of Harry’s early years as an orphan and outcast,” Rowling said in a statement.
Rowling is collaborating alongside popular British theatre producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callendar. She will help the playwright on the stage show, but will not directly write the script herself.
Although numerous people have requested to work with Rowling on a play based on the series, she said she ultimately chose to collaborate with Friendman and Callendar because their “vision was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry’s story to the stage.”
There is no opening date for the show yet, as the writer and director have not been selected. The play will begin its development next year.
The popular seven-book series started in 1997 with THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE and ended with THE DEATHLY HALLOWS in 2007. In total, the books have been translated in 77 different languages and over 450 million copies have been sold worldwide! Furthermore, Warner Bros. has made the magical series into eight movies.
