A new species of bee has been named after Dr. Sheldon Cooper from the hit TV show THE BIG BANG THEORY. This may sound like a joke — a Bazinga, if you will — but it’s totally true!
Researches Andre Nemesio of the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia opted to name the bee Euglossa bazinga. He says he chose the name not only to honour the character of Sheldon Cooper, played by Emmy Award-winner Jim Parsons, but also because the bee had long been tricking researchers!
Apparently, the Euglossa bazinga looks very similar to the Euglossa ignita and researchers had been “fooled” by the sneaky bee for a while before realising that it was a totally different type! After hearing that explanation, the name seems fitting.
