Austin Mahone recently had a big secret to share with his dedicated fans, the Mahomies. He was releasing his long-awaited EP, ‘The Secret’, and embarking on a summer tour with special guests Fifth Harmony, The Vamps, Alex Angelo and Shawn Mendes! The EP, which is out now, features a solid mix of upbeat anthems, slow ballads, and songs from the heart, and the tour promises to be an unforgettable and high energy party.
THE MAGAZINE caught up with Austin Mahone in Toronto where he revealed more of his biggest secrets about the EP, the tour and working with Justin Bieber!
You recently released your EP, ‘The Secret’! Can you describe the sound of the EP?
All of the songs on ‘The Secret’ sound like one of my songs called “What About Love” so that’s cool. I have a couple of really nice slow ballads as well and I have a song on there that I wrote and produced myself.
Do you have a favourite song off ‘The Secret’?
Right now, one called “The One I’ve Waited For”. It’s a nice slow ballad. I’m talking about a girl and she’s the one I’ve been waiting my whole life for.
Now that the EP has dropped, you’re on tour with many special guests including Fifth Harmony! What can fans expect from an Austin Mahone concert?
They can expect a lot of energy and a lot of fun. I want my fans and people that might not be fans to leave feeling good and wanting more, so there are a lot of dancers, I have a different stage and I have a band this time. It’s really cool!
When did you know you wanted to pursue singing and performing?
Probably when I was 15 because that’s basically when I started on YouTube. I just enjoyed it a lot so that’s when I started travelling to different places and performing at people’s birthday parties and small things like that.
What are the most played songs on your iPod right now?
I’m a huge fan of Drake so Drake’s latest album. He has one song that’s on one of his old albums called “Houstatlantavegas”. That’s a great song. I like Chris Brown a lot as well.
You’ve been spotted working in the studio a lot with Justin Bieber recently in Miami, so I think we all want to know, what’s going on?! Is there a Justin / Austin duet in the works?
Not a duet, but he had a song that he had about a year ago that he had worked on and he’s going for a different sound now so he wanted to give that song to me so we’ve been working on that. I’m going to try to save that for my next album.
Has Justin given you any good advice?
He gives me advice when I’m singing, like if I’m in the booth, he’ll tell me to sing a different way or warm up a certain way so he’s good creatively.
Justin’s Canadian, and we all love him. Speaking of Canadians, how do your Canadian fans compare to the rest?
My Canadian fans are the best! Every time I come here they’re crazy and they’re loud and I love them. I love coming to Toronto.
