Mitchel Musso charms us as Oliver Oken on HANNAH MONTANA and now he’s made the jump to music with his self-titled debut album. We sat down recently with the star to talk about…
His musical roots:
I was like six and I started with a piano, and then that led into the guitar, and then the drums and eventually I was making songs with my older brother…. And now Mason is in Metro Station… so after I saw that they were huge, I was like, now I’m going to get into music too!
Working on his album:
I recorded 47 songs in like 2 months, [and then] had to pick 12 songs out of that to make this record…. We’ve definitely been blessed with some of the coolest people that I’ll ever be able to work with.
His sound and musical influences:
I listen to everything from Elton John to Lil Wayne. I tried to add all those sounds to my music [and] I think a lot of the beats are very hip-hop inspired, very rap inspired. Lot of 808s… lots of electro dance rhythms on the keyboard….
His favourite song from the album:
Either [the one] with Mason, “Shout It”, or maybe the song me and Katelyn Tarver did together. She has a phenomenal voice [and the song is called] “Us Against The World”. [It’s] very MGMT meets Chris Brown with my own sound mixed in to it.
What kind of music he’d like to do next:
I’m really into that whole rap and singing thing, like that TI/Justin Timberlake kind of song.
What Miley thinks of his album:
Miley was the second person I went to show the album to…. She was very complimentary and she wrote two songs, a duet for us and then a song that she wrote for me to sing on my second album.
Being on tour:
I love touring! Sometimes it does get depressing, because you’re away… but you know, what it all comes down to is music is my life and when you’re performing on stage, you realize why you’re doing it.
