The Fire Emblem series is the latest to be making its debut in 3D. Fire Emblem Awakening is the first game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS. The game follows Lord Chrom as he bands together with an army of brave companions to save the world from evil.

A unique feature to the Fire Emblem series is that if a character dies in battle, they are permanently gone forever. This feature will be in Fire Emblem Awakening, adding onto the tension and urgency in the game play that the series is known for. There will also be a “casual mode,” where players can play casually without worrying about losing a character permanently.

There are also new features to this game. Characters can pair up and either attack with dual strikes together, or protect each other from enemies. As the game goes on, the two partners build a relationship and can eventually get married and have children.

Using the StreetPass feature on the Nintendo 3DS, players can create “StreetPass teams.” Players can tag someone else who owns the console and then engage with the opposing team. They can battle for control of the opposing team’s leader, recruit the leader with gold or buy any items that the other person is carrying.

Along with the regular story mode, players can buy and download weekly maps. The maps offer valuable rewards when completed, including new playable characters, class types and skills. The first map, available now and free until March 5, features the legendary Fire Emblem character Marth. Maps can be purchased through the in-game shop. Additionally, Nintendo will also release new content through SpotPass for free. SpotPass connects the console through wireless Internet and downloads content directly to the system. This content will start at launch and continue for the months following, featuring new maps with new storylines, characters and items.

A Fire Emblem Awakening Nintendo 3DS bundle is available exclusively at Best Buy and Future Shop. In the bundle, the game is pre-installed on a blue Nintendo 3DS console decorated with Fire Emblem artwork. It also includes a 4GB SD memory card.
