ROUND 1: ACCESSIBILITY ATTACK
BLOGGER: Google turned up the heat in the epic battle between blogs and vlogs (video blogs) when it acquired two of the biggest names in the business, but was Blogger or YouTube a better investment? Both are tools to voice your opinions, but not all tools are created equal. All you need to start your own blog on Blogger is a keyboard and an ounce of inspiration.
YOUTUBE: If you want to post videos on YouTube, you’ll need a camera first, and since not everyone has a webcam, fewer people can actually start their own vlog. Also, depending on the size of your videos, they can take a long time to upload, whereas on Blogger you can instantly publish your thoughts with the push of a button.
Blogger is faster and more accessible than its opponent. Blogger pushes YouTube’s buttons, gaining the first point!
SCORE: BLOGGER – 1
YOUTUBE – 0
ROUND 2: INTERACTION ARGUMENT
BLOGGER: Blogs and vlogs are only as good as they are interactive. After all, what’s the point in sharing your ideas if nobody responds to them? Readers on Blogger can leave comments and feedback on your posts, so you can see whatthey think aboutyour thoughts.
YOUTUBE: YouTube is tops when it comes to interactivity. Not only can you post text comments on videos, but you can also film and post a video response! In this way, there is a stronger connection between the vlogger and the viewer because you can actually “talk” with other users and engage in a real dialogue.
Blogger is vexed by text! YouTube rebounds in Round 2!
SCORE: BLOGGER – 1
YOUTUBE – 1
ROUND 3: PERSONAL POTENTIAL
BLOGGER: On Blogger, you are free to personalize your blog however you want – no strings attached. Users can pick one of the premade templates or use HTML to fully customize their blog’s appearance!
YOUTUBE: YouTubers can add banners to customize the look of their channels, but there’s a catch: you have to be a YouTube “Partner” in order to get the ultimate personalization options. That means you’ll need to attract thousands of viewers before you can add pictures to your page. Until then, you’ll have to settle for custom colours.
YouTube might let you “Broadcast Yourself”, but Blogger lets you trulybe yourself! Blogger banks another point!
SCORE: BLOGGER – 2
YOUTUBE – 1
ROUND 4: BAD AD BATTLE
BLOGGER: Advertisements are always bad, right? Wrong. Though ads can be annoying at times, with the help of Google AdSense, blogging can pay off – literally. Of course, the choice is ultimately yours: you don’t have to put ads on your blog if you don’t want to, but if you’d like to exchange pennies for posts, then it makes “cents” to have ads!
YOUTUBE: One can argue that Blogger is better because it has fewer ads; however, YouTube has revolutionized online advertising. Look no further than the impact YouTube has had on political campaigns for evidence that this medium can mobilize the masses behind a person, product, organization, or social movement.
YouTube makes advertising entertaining. The score is tied! Will the blog or vlog become the online commentary king?
SCORE: BLOGGER – 2
YOUTUBE – 2
ROUND 5: “REACH” FOR THE TOP
BLOGGER: Opinions will only make a difference if they get heard. Since Blogger doesn’t rank posts the same way YouTube does based on the number of times each video has been viewed, it’s harder to get your blog noticed.
YOUTUBE: You have a better chance at seeing your ideas go “viral” on YouTube because video offers more opportunities for creativity. Users can choose a genre and combine multiple mediums such as text, photos, film, animation, sound, and music to convey a message. Plus, YouTube increases your reach by allowing viewers to subscribe to your channel or “favourite” your videos and, if you’re lucky, you might just get featured on the homepage!
YouTube’s rapid global reach rules Round 5. Blogger suffers the final blow!
SCORE: BLOGGER – 2
YOUTUBE – 3
ROUND UP: Blogger tried to think outside the box, but fell down the ‘Tube. Although Blogger has personalized the Internet since 1999 by inviting thousands of people to claim a little piece of the web, YouTube has managed to do in only three years what Blogger could not: become a pop culture phenomenon. With greater interactivity, creativity, and global influence, YouTube blurs the line between Hollywood and homemade, putting power back in the people’s hands. So, don’t be a newb. Ditch that blog and join the party at YouTube!
