We’ve seen an outpouring of inventive t-shirt designs from readers after the second YOU DESIGN call in the Nov/Dec 2011 issue of The Magazine, and on the magazine’s website at themagazine. Editors spent days reviewing the submissions, weighing imagination, color balance, and how well each design would translate to screen printing and everyday wear. After careful consideration, a standout design emerged. The winner was McKenna, an 11-year-old from Ontario.

Congratulations to McKenna! She has earned a free one-year subscription to The Magazine, which includes full access to every issue, special features, and reader-exclusive content. Her winning design will be highlighted in the next issue and on the magazine’s digital gallery, inspiring other young artists across North America.

Even though McKenna stood out, the sheer volume of excellent entries deserved a broader spotlight. The team wanted to showcase several other impressive submissions from young creators whose work captured the contest’s spirit. Here are a few notable entries from participants across Canada:

Jennifer, 10, ON: Jennifer’s entry boasted a lively mix of bold shapes and bright colors that conveyed movement and fun. The illustration leaned into a playful street art vibe while staying clean enough to print beautifully on a T-shirt, making it memorable in the junior design pool.

Nicole, 9, ON: Nicole’s design from Ontario offered a charming blend of friendly characters and sunny hues. The piece conveyed curiosity and optimism, using simple lines that stay clear when printed on fabric.

Rebecca, 12, ON: Rebecca’s entry from Ontario showcased intricate patterns and confident composition. The design balanced detailed elements with bold negative space, resulting in a look that reads well from a distance and up close.

Shelby, 11, AB: Shelby’s submission from Alberta demonstrated a dynamic style that fused graphic shapes with a dash of whimsy. The imagery suggested movement and energy, with a color palette that remains playful yet easy to read on fabric.

To explore ongoing contests, readers can follow the magazine’s updates for new opportunities. Future chances to win a free subscription are open to submissions through the official channels when contests are announced. Images and entries should follow the published guidelines.
