Sad but exciting news has recently been confirmed for DOCTOR WHO fans: Matt Smith, the 11th doctor will be hanging up his bowtie and fez at the end of the year.

While rumours had been swirling around about him staying on for the new 8th season, it looks like we will only actually be seeing him twice more. The 11th Doctor will star in the 50th anniversary episode, which airs November 23, and the following Christmas Special on December 25.

He announced his departure through the BBC website saying: “…The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas Special!”

We will also be getting a return of the 10th Doctor, played by David Tennant, in the 50th anniversary episode, as the show celebrates the Doctor’s 50 years of television brilliance.

Matt Smith played the 11th Doctor for four seasons and while we are sad to see him go, we are also excited because this means a new Regeneration and a 12th Doctor! Throughout the rest of the year the “Whoniverse” will be buzzing with rumours and guesses over who will play the next Doctor.

Tell us who you think should play the next Doctor on DOCTOR WHO?
