Meet J.J Totah: A Rising Comedy Talent on Screen and Stage

How did you first become interested in stand-up comedy?

Totah discovered a love for stand-up after a woman in an acting class connected him with a kid’s group that performs for young audiences. He felt the spark immediately and decided to pursue it seriously. From that moment, he began performing regularly, testing material on small stages and at local events, learning how timing and audience connection can turn a simple joke into real laughter. Those early experiences showed he had a natural instinct for live performance and a bold energy that would carry him to bigger rooms as he grew.

How do you come up with your comedy routines?

He explains that daily life at home provides steady inspiration because his family is lively and full of character. Observing those moments, he turns them into stories that resonate with others. He keeps a notebook and writes ideas during spare moments, then tests them with friends and family to refine pacing and delivery. The approach blends personal experience with broad humor so audiences of all ages can connect, especially fans across Canada and the United States.

Who is your favourite comedian?

Robin Williams stands out as a major influence for Totah, whose energy and improvisational skill left a lasting impression. He remembers seeing Williams on the set of a show during the first season of BACK IN THE GAME, a moment that felt almost unreal for a young performer. Another favorite is Ellen DeGeneres, whose warmth and humor show how to connect with viewers through kindness and timing. Those examples continue to shape Totah’s own performances.

What’s been your favourite stand-up gig that you’ve done so far?

Every show brings a thrill, and he enjoys the chance to make people smile and share a moment of joy. He thrives on the energy of different venues, from intimate clubs to larger stages, because each setting creates a distinct atmosphere. His aim is simple: entertain, uplift, and leave the room wanting more. The shared laughter is what drives him to keep performing.

Tell us about your character on BACK IN THE GAME.

The character he portrays loves his mom, has a keen sense for fashion, and carries a distinctive vibe. He also shares a passion for baseball and a unique personality that makes him memorable within the ensemble. The portrayal captures familiar family dynamics in a way that resonates with young viewers and their families, adding depth to the show’s lighthearted tone.

What was the best experience you had while filming BACK IN THE GAME?

One standout moment came during a paintball outing with the cast. It was a blast, filled with laughter and teamwork, even though the weather was freezing. The memory highlights the camaraderie behind the scenes and how those moments translate into stronger on-screen chemistry with co-stars.

Is there any advice you would give to anyone your age who wants to get into comedy or acting?

His guidance is simple and sincere: follow what you love and let the path unfold naturally. There is no guaranteed method or secret trick. Regular practice, openness to taking risks, and steady passion pave the way for opportunities to appear in time.

If you couldn’t be doing comedy or acting, what other job would you want to have?

He believes nothing else excites him as much as performing. The arts hold his interest because film and storytelling fascinate him. If another route ever sparked interest, it would likely still involve creativity, but for now acting and comedy remain his core joy.

What projects do you have coming up in the future?

Looking ahead, Totah plans to shoot additional Jessie episodes and audition for new projects that expand his on-screen work. He is also exploring YouTube projects to share his humor directly with fans, testing new formats and ideas. The mix of television and online content keeps his schedule busy across North America, with opportunities in Canada and the United States.

Thanks to J.J Totah for sharing his journey. Fans can follow him on YouTube and catch upcoming Jessie episodes on Family Channel in Canada and the United States.
