Last week The Magazine sat down with Trevor Tordjman and the rest of Family Channel’s cast for a look at The Next Step during the HIT THE FLOOR TOUR, a nine‑day mall circuit across Canada. The dancers kicked off in Oshawa, Ontario and wrapped up in Vancouver, British Columbia, giving fans a chance to connect with them in person between performances. Tordjman spoke about his favorite moments on set and what he hopes to see for his character in upcoming seasons.
What is it like interacting with your fans face-to-face?
Fans in person are electric, a sentiment Trevor Tordjman shared with The Magazine. While social networks keep conversations buzzing, these live shows offer a direct connection that energizes everyone on stage. “It’s amazing. We get a lot of attention from the fans through social networking, so when we do these live performances, it’s such a great opportunity for us to connect with the fans. It’s always great to do these live performances,” Tordjman explained to The Magazine.
What’s your favourite dance so far in the whole season?
Tordjman points to a standout routine known as the stand‑up dance. He says it has long been a favorite because it blends the energy of a group number with intimate solo moments, letting each dancer shine before the whole team comes together on stage. Fans will get to see this sequence live on the tour. “I really like the stand‑up dance. There are solo sections in it, so you get to see us dance individually and then we dance as a group,” he noted to The Magazine.
What is the weirdest fan encounter you have ever had?
Trevor describes scenes of fans bursting with excitement and going full fan‑girl, while others simply stare in awe and stay quiet. It’s funny because their parents are nearby and they end up asking questions that light up the room, only to be met with surprised silence that’s oddly adorable.
What are you most looking forward to with this tour?
Beyond performing, the chance to travel with the cast across the country excites him. He hasn’t visited many of these cities in Canada, so the opportunity to explore new towns and meet new people adds a special spark to the journey. “I’m really looking forward to being with the cast and dancing with them once again, but definitely traveling. I’m so happy Family Channel is bringing us on tour for this because we get to travel all across the country and for someone like me, I haven’t been to all these places in Canada, so it will be really cool to get to travel there. It’ll be a really fun experience!” he shared.
Does your show “family” act as foster family, when you are away from home?
The group is incredibly tight‑knit. They feel like a real family, and they support one another every day. The close bonds make long days easier and reinforce the idea that real friends have each other’s backs when work becomes demanding.
What was the best part about filming season 2?
Season 2 brought a noticeable lift in everything from dancing to acting. The dancers approached the material with greater seriousness, and improvement was visible across the board. New dance numbers arrived and choreographers joined the team, elevating the performances to a higher level. The overall vibe promised an exciting, vibrant season ahead.
How has your character evolved since the show started?
James has become more layered. The character is cool and laid back, yet his struggle with math introduces real stress. As the series progresses, James grows up, moving from a carefree attitude to facing challenges with a steadier mindset. Viewers see him evolve as serious events unfold, revealing a more nuanced side beneath the calm exterior.
How do you handle the giggles?
Giggles pop up frequently when the cast is surrounded by friends on set. The trick is to refocus quickly: step away for a moment, regain composure, and return with a serious mindset. Trevor notes that a brief break often helps him reset and stay in character when it counts.
Unlike your character, are you good in math? What are some suggestions you would give kids if they were struggling in school?
Math is described as a muscle that needs regular training. Trevor stresses consistent practice and homework as essential to growth. For kids tackling math challenges, the key is steady effort and deliberate repetition to build confidence and skill over time.
What would you like to happen for your character in upcoming seasons?
Trevor would like to see James win competitions and reveal more of his true colors as the story continues.
What’s next for you? Any plans for fall?
Beyond dance and acting, the goal is to keep sharpening both crafts. The plan includes continued training, meeting people who can help pursue a professional path, and sharing that journey with others who can benefit from it.
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Trevor, good luck on the tour!
