Last week, THE MAGAZINE got a chance to speak with speak with the cast of Family Channel’s hit show, THE NEXT STEP! The dancers are making their way across Canada for THE NEXT STEP: HIT THE FLOOR TOUR and fans could not be more excited. The cast started their nine-day shopping mall tour on October 19 in Oshawa, ON and will be ending on October 27 in Vancouver, BC. We sat down to chat with Trevor Tordjman about his favourite moments on the set and what he hopes will happen for his character in upcoming seasons.
What is it like interacting with your fans face-to face?
It’s amazing. We get a lot of attention from the fans through social networking, so when we do these live performances, it’s such a great opportunity for us to connect with the fans. It’s always great to do these live performances.
What’s your favourite dance so far in the whole season?
I really like the “stand-up” dance, it’s a dance we’ve been doing for a while and we are always adding new choreography. There are some solo sections in it, so you get to see us dance individually and then we dance as a group. They will be able to see that dance on the tour.
What is the weirdest fan encounter you have ever had?
Sometimes, a lot of the fans will get really, really excited and they’ll go crazy fan-girl. Sometimes, they’ll just stare at you and be very quiet. It’s really funny because their parents are always with them and they’ll be like, “What? You had so many questions for them!” But then they get really quiet which is really funny and cute.
What are you most looking forward to with this tour?
I’m really looking forward to being with the cast and dancing with them once again, but definitely travelling. I’m so happy Family Channel is bringing us on tour for this because we get to travel all across the country and for someone like me, I haven’t been to all these places in Canada, so it will be really cool to get to travel there. It’ll be a really fun experience!
Does your show “family” act as foster family, when you are away from home?
We’re very tight-knit. We’re like a family, we’re just really good friends. So we obviously have each other’s back all the time and support each other. It’s so great being that close to the people you’re working with all the time.
What was the best part about filming season 2?
I think everything for season 2 is an up from season 1. With the dancing, everybody was ready to take it like so seriously, so obviously everybody improved over the year; from season 1 to season 2. Everyone is just very focused, so there are new dance numbers and we’ve brought in choreographers. The dancing is going to be unreal. As for the acting, everyone improved as well so it’s just a step up, it’ll be really cool.
How has your character evolved since the show started?
My character has evolved a lot. James is a very cool guy. He’s very laid back, but it’s ironic because he’s struggling with math and he actually does get stressed out about things. So for him to show that, it’s almost a step up. You get to watch James grow up because at first he’s kind of ignorant, very laid back, doesn’t worry about anything, but once something serious happens he does actually worry about it, like his math issues right now. James definitely evolves as the show continues on.
How do you handle the giggles?
They definitely happen a lot, especially when you’re working with people that are your good friends. A lot of it is just overcoming it in your head and knowing that you have to take this seriously. It’s just calming yourself down to get rid of the giggles. Often times when I get the giggles, I just take a little moment to myself, walk away for a minute, calm myself down, get into a serious mindset and then come back in.
Unlike your character, are you good in math? What are some suggestions you would give kids if they were struggling in school?
In school, I wasn’t bad at math but the thing with math is, it requires a lot of homework. It’s like a muscle. You have to work at it, so you definitely should try and do as much as you can all the time because you need to flex that muscle and eventually it will grow. That’s the key to math, practicing it. It doesn’t just come to you, so for kids that are maybe struggling in math, the best advice would be to practice the subject that you are struggling in.
What would you like to happen for your character in upcoming seasons?
I definitely want us to win the competitions that we go to. I would to see some of James’ true colours come out.
What’s next for you? Any plans for fall?
One of my main goals is obviously to train in dance and acting. I very much want to improve both those arts. But also, I want to teach everywhere and just meet people. My main goal is to meet as many people as I can that can help me do this as a living.
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Trevor, good luck on the tour!
