Back in September, THE MAG visited the set of FLICKA 3, the third chapter in the Flicka series that began with 2006’s Flicka and continued with 2010’s Flicka 2. The story follows Kelly, a teenage rider portrayed by Kacey Rohl, as she faces the challenge of rekindling her love for horseback riding while a spirited mustang anchors the journey. While Flicka anchors the film, FLICKA 3 also explores family dynamics, healing, and the ways people relate to one another when life gets tough.
THE MAG arrived on a brisk morning in Kelowna, British Columbia, the production’s chosen stand-in for Wyoming. The stunning setting and the carefully designed horse paddocks provided the perfect backdrop for the day’s championship sequences. Crew and cast were already in motion, the landscape lending authenticity to the on-screen sport and the emotional stakes.
Between rehearsals and filming, one scene featured Kelly alongside Stephanie, played by Siobhan Williams, and the team seized the moment to speak with several cast members about their experiences on FLICKA 3.
Kacey Rohl explained that she had long dreamed of working with horses and that the training was a steep learning curve, including time at horse camps and plenty of YouTube tutorials. She also noted that Clint Black’s involvement added a special spark to the project.
Clint Black, who returns as Toby, seemed completely at ease around the horses. The production became a family affair, with his daughter Lily and wife Lisa Hartman also appearing in the film. Lisa portrays Lindy, Kelly’s mother, and she described Flicka as magical because the horse helps give the story its emotional core.
After touring the set, anticipation for FLICKA 3’s outcome grew. The team is eager to see how the film unfolds, and fans can look for the movie on DVD when it becomes available.
Hospitality came from a group of sponsors whose generosity kept the crew comfortable and the filming schedule running smoothly.
