Back in September, THE MAG had the pleasure of visiting the set of FLICKA 3, the sequel to 2006’s FLICKA and 2010’s FLICKA 2. In the movie, a young teen named Kelly (Kacey Rohl) struggles to find her love of horseback riding again. While the heart of the story belongs to Flicka, a mustang that seems to help those around her, FLICKA 3 is also about family, healing and how people relate to each other.
We got a peek into how close everyone was behind the scenes when we arrived on set early in the morning. Most of the cast and crew were already hard at work on the beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia, set, which will stand in for Wyoming in the movie and was the perfect place for the filming of the day’s championship scenes.
In between watching the rehearsing and filming of scenes, one of which involved Kelly and Stephanie (played by HEARTLAND’s Siobhan Williams), we got a chance to chat with some of the cast.
Most of the cast talked about what a great experience they were having filming FLICKA 3. While Kacey Rohl mentioned that she’s wanted to work with horses for some time, she described her training as “the highest learning curve,” one that included going to horse camp and watching YouTube videos. She also said that country star Clint Black’s involvement in the movie was key for her: “Clint Black. How cool is that?”
Speaking of Clint Black, who reprises his role as Toby, he seemed right at home on set with the horses: “I’m a cowboy at heart.” Making FLICKA 3 was also a family project, as his daughter Lily and his wife Lisa Hartman both had roles in the movie. Lisa plays Kelly’s mom, Lindy, and described Flicka as “magical…. It’s the heart that drives [the movie].”
After visiting the set, we can’t wait to see how FLICKA 3 turns out! Catch the movie when it comes out on DVD next year.
