PROM follows Brookside High’s senior class as they approach prom, offering a nostalgic look at high school rites of passage for audiences in the United States and Canada.
The film centers on a prom committee scrambling to salvage the big night after a setback. Nova, the committee leader, teams with Jesse when other members are unavailable. At first Nova questions Jesse’s usefulness, but he proves capable, and the two grow closer as they work side by side to get the event back on track.
Dance floors, fashion, and the pageantry of a starry prom night set the stage. Brookside High treats Prom as the Olympics of high school life, and as the big night nears a crisis hits. Principal Dunnan pairs Nova with Jesse to drive the recovery effort, and their collaboration gradually uncovers a spark between them.
The ensemble includes Tyler, a confident jock with a big ego, and his longtime girlfriend Jordan, who also has eyes on someone else. Mei and Justin navigate a tug-of-war between a dream school and a nearby university. Rolo’s Greek Canadian girlfriend Athena appears suspiciously fake. And Lloyd struggles to find a girl who notices him, raising more tension as prom night approaches. What will happen when the clock runs out on the big event?
The soundtrack brings energy to the film, with upbeat tracks that push scenes of dancing and celebration. Notable songs include Not Your Birthday by Allstar Weekend and Time Stand by Moon, and Thomas McDonell, who portrays Jesse, is the lead singer of Moon.
While the plot may feel familiar and the character development light, PROM still delivers some endearing moments and a playful energy that makes it enjoyable.
Prom night arrives with energy and a sense of possibility for the characters, inviting audiences to reminisce about their own memories or daydream about a night of celebration.
