Surprise, surprise, THE AVENGERS won out at the box office this weekend. With about as much hype behind it as Justin Beiber’s new music video, we’re not the least bit surprised!
Even though success was foreseeable, no one thought it would be to this degree. According to Deadline Hollywood, the film raked in over $207 million domestically over the weekend, beating out the previous record of $169 million held by HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART 2. THE AVENGERS are also now in first place for the highest Saturday gross of all time with $69.7 million made in a single day.
But Phil Contrino of BoxOffice.com thinks that the big numbers may dwindle in the weeks to come. “I don’t think it can possibly manage to drop only 55-60 percent like most summer blockbusters, but if it does then it could very well challenge the $533.3 million domestic gross of THE DARK KNIGHT,” Contrino told MTV News. He continued to say that it’s unlikely it will surpass TITANIC or AVATAR for highest grossing films of all time.
Still, director Joss Whedon and everyone else who worked on THE AVENGERS should be proud!
