The third episode of THE NEXT STEP begins with Emily and Michelle getting the rules for the competition to see who wins the title of Dance Captain. A Troupe will be split up in two teams: one for Emily and one for Michelle. The girls will then have to choreograph a routine to perform for Kate and Chris.

Emily immediately calls the E-Girls, but Chris stops her, saying that he will choose the teams. He gives the newer dancers to Emily and also splits up the E-Girls. Riley and Stephanie, Emily’s sister and best friend, are put on Michelle’s team.

Some laughs are provided from West, who challenges James in a dance battle, which is his way to make James like him. James doesn’t understand what West is doing and walks away instead. Daniel and Chloe say that West did the same thing to everybody in back when they were in B Troupe.

Emily gets straight to work with her team. She overworks the group for hours without a break and even keeps them in the studio past midnight. At one point, Chloe says that she has to leave. She had to get a job because her father isn’t working anymore, but she doesn’t want the others to know she is working. Emily doesn’t give her a choice, forcing her to stay.

Meanwhile, Michelle starts off her rehearsal with an icebreaker to warm the team up. They play “dance-imals,” where you dance like an animal. Everyone except for Stephanie participates, who feels the game is childish. They start practicing the routine and everyone likes it. Even Stephanie says that the dance is “not horrible.” The group decides that they are happy with the routine and end practice early.

Emily finally lets her group have a short break when she sees Riley. She asks her sister about Michelle’s dance, but Riley reassures her that hers is probably better. Riley later says that she is disappointed at how threatened Emily is by Michelle, thinking it could affect the Troupe as a whole.

Michelle and Emily check in with Kate and Chris to see how things are going. Emily asks for another hour to practice, while Michelle is confident that she doesn’t need any more time. Kate decides that it’s time to dance!

Emily volunteers to go first. She starts her routine by snapping in Michelle’s face. After the routine, James and West say that Emily’s routine was more focused on her strengths over anyone else’s.

As Emily’s best friend, Stephanie knows what she has to do to. She purposely tanks the routine, putting everyone out of place. She blames it on not enough rehearsal. Kate says that it was obvious how serious Emily wants the position by the effort she put in compared to Michelle.

Kate and Chris make the decision that Emily will be Dance Captain. The whole Troupe speaks out, disagreeing with the decision. Chris grabs a box full of ping pong balls. He drops the balls on the ground, telling everyone they have two minutes to clean up the balls or else they’ll be doing four hours of abs.

West takes this opportunity to dance at James again. This time, James joins in! Everyone sees the fun they are having and starts dancing too. As James says, “That’s the cool thing about dance. Dance broke us apart, and now dance brought us together.” Michelle agrees, saying, “We’re all here to dance, so why not dance!”

It had been a rough couple days for the dancers but the episode ends on a high note as the team works and dances cooperatively together! What do you think about Emily being dance captain? Let us know if the comments below!
