Winnie the Pooh, coming to theatres this Friday, is based on the book series by A. A. Milne. Lots of classic children’s books have been turned into movies. Here are some of our favorites!

10) WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (2009)
A young boy named Max runs away to a world of Wild Things who befriend him and crown him king. The movie’s great when it stays true to the book, but we think the parts in the “real” world were an unnecessary addition. Based on the book by Maurice Sendak.

9)CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY(2005)
Charlie Bucket, along with four other children, is given a tour of the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory by its eccentric owner. Based on the book by Roald Dahl.

8)JUMANJI (1995)
When two children start playing an old, forgotten board game, they release a man who has been trapped in the game for decades, and a host of dangers they can only defeat by playing the game to the end. Based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg.

7)THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES(2008)
Siblings Mallory, Jared and Simon discover a world of fairies and magic when they move into a run-down country estate. It’s exciting and a bit creepy, but the book series, by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, is even better.

6)ALICE IN WONDERLAND(2010)
Tim Burton’s adaption of Lewis Carroll’s story of a girl who falls down a rabbit hole is more of a sequel than a retelling of the original story. But the journey through Wonderland is still strange and fascinating.

5) THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX (2008)
What’s a mouse to do when he would rather read books than eat them? Leave home for the world of the castle, of course, and meet a rat, a serving-girl, and a princess along the way. Based on The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread by Kate DiCamillo.

4)THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE(2005)
Four siblings—Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy—discover a passage to another world inside a forgotten wardrobe. Once there, they are caught up in a war against the White Witch, whose reign has caused a constant, never-ending winter. This is a classic, as is the book by C. S. Lewis.

3)THE NEVER-ENDING STORY(1984)
When Bastian discovers a strange old book, he is caught up in the story of a far-off world. As he reads further he learns the fate of this kingdom may rest on is shoulders. Based on the book by Michael Ende.

2)THE POLAR EXPRESS(2004)
A boy is taken on a magical Christmas Eve journey. Based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg.

1)THE PRINCESS BRIDE(1987)
One of the best films of all time, period. Westley must rescue his one true love, Princess Buttercup, from the hands of the evil Prince Humperdink. It’s “inconceivable” this movie wouldn’t make the top of our list! Based on the book by William Goodman.
