THE MAGAZINE recently caught up with Alyssa to talk about “Talk Me Down” and Peter Pan.
What’s the storyline behind the music video for “Talk Me Down”?
The is about cyber bullying. Cyber bullying was a huge issue last year and, as a result, there were a lot of teen suicides. People talked about it for a day then pushed it under the rug, so I wanted to bring the issue up through my music video where I could showcase it in a way that people don’t really look at cyber bullying. I tried to show the more physical abuse side of cyber bullying because people don’t actually get bullying unless they see somebody getting shoved into a locker. I tried to draw connection and show the hurt of your words.
The video ends with a powerful statement – “If you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem.” What do those words mean to you?
It means that every person is given the chance to make a change every single day, in everything they do. You can choose to be the best person you can be and be the kindest person you can be, or you can indulge in the negative and bring yourself and those around you down. You choose the fate of our future every time you make a decision, as minor as it may seem. Make it a positive one, because it just might save a life.
What’s your favourite song off your album, ‘The Game’?
“Burned.” It’s one of the closest songs to me and I think it’s had the most reaction and it’s the most relatable song.
Jesse Labelle just released his new single, “Heartbreak Coverup,” and you’re featured on it. What was it like recording with your label mate?
It was fun. I worked with him a lot during my record as well. He co-wrote a couple songs on my album. We’ve done a lot together. I’m very excited to have worked on his new album and second single, as well. I’m very close with him so it’s good to be doing this with someone you’re familiar with.
Who were and are your musical inspirations?
I was very influenced, growing up, by Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston…all the big powerhouse female vocalists. Now I’m very influenced by Regina Spektor, Adele and still Christina Aguilera. I feel more influenced by writers than vocalists because I’ve kinda figured out who I am as a vocalist and I’m trying to explore different avenues through my writing.
Who are you listening to right now?
I just downloaded One Direction’s new album and it has not turned off in my car. I’m obsessed.
Have you ever been starstruck?
I met Jeremy Sumpter (Peter Pan) when I was 12 years old. I told all of my friends at school that he touched my butt because when he went to hug me he kinda grazed it with his sleeve. “Peter Pan grabbed my butt.” That was the story.
What’s next for you?
I have been releasing “Alone Again” across the world, mainly in Europe, and I have been touring the UK. I’ll be going to the different markets now, like Romania and France. I’m working on taking over the world!
Thank you, Alyssa!
