Festive Frankenpolishes

Ever get down in the dumps about the sheer lack of choices when it comes to nail polish? We didn’t think so. Conversely, ever feel blue just thinking about spending a minimum of ten dollars on every single shade you want, which far bypasses the limits of the rainbow? That definitely sounds more like it. Not only is breaking the bank a bit of an issue, but even worse, often the shade you want is often quite elusive. It seems to be one of the cruel facts of life that every colour but the exact colour you specifically want is available—like entering a newly built food court in a major mall and realizing that every conceivable fast food restaurant is there, except for the sushi bar you’ve been craving for the past twenty minutes. But we digress.

One of the best things things about the beauty world is its seemingly boundless possibilities—you can have fun with it just like you do with your favourite art supplies. Our team of “experts”—more like devoted beauty mavens—have discovered a truly glorious blog called NEVER TOO MUCH GLITTER (or MIXING ORIGINAL NAIL POLISH DAILY), which entails the adventures of a nail polish junkie on her quest to define the perfect nail colours. She calls her creations “frankenpolishes”, and what she does is mix things like eyeshadow pigment either with coloured polishes or clear ones, providing a customizable twist on your basic array of shades and shimmers. The blogger attended nail design school in Tokyo where she grew to be inspired by the sweet kookiness of the Harajuku district, and has never looked back since—her blog and Etsy shop are full of interesting designs that you could replicate at home in a pinch.

This new revelation may be just what you need to spice up your beauty life, especially when the winter season brings in such dreary shades sometimes—don’t get us wrong, grey and nude are lovely, but wearing them day-in and day-out? Not really our speed. We have our eye on the festive little design above—Christmasy, but not overly so; a perfect balance. In any case, these designs provide a nice change from our everyday fallbacks, because, in all honesty, would much rather get a little funky—and have some fun with it.
