This year has been filled with so many amazing songs that we had trouble choosing our favourites. From catchy jams to dance-able hits from a variety of great artists, we chose the 10 that we think had the most impact and were the most noteworthy of all.
10.”Skyfall” by Adele: The theme song to the highly anticipated Bond film of the same name does not disappoint. Adele’s deep voice coupled with the dramatic melody of the song make it sound like it was taken right out of the 1960s. This song just epitomizes the Bond movies.
9.”Diamonds” by Rihanna: Our favourite bad girl shows us she’s grown up into a creative and reflective woman with this song. The slow, yet catchy, melody perfectly complements the simple lyrics telling the tale of love. This song was the first single off Rihanna’s seventh studio album and was a preview of the more mature sound that Rihanna is moving towards.
8.”Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye f. Kimbra: Touching, emotive and paired with an amazing video, this song is dripping with so much beautiful emotion that you forget that the song is simply about a couple’s breakup. With its calm, mellow start and fiery chorus it is close to being the most perfect pop song ever.
7.”Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars: Reminiscent of ’80s new wave with a clear influence by the Police, this song is one we can’t get out of our heads and we don’t mind! The creative melodies and emotional lyrics are brilliantly mixed together in an energetic, upbeat tune that you can’t help but bop your head to.
6.”Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber: The Biebs dropped his first non-holiday single this year and it was well worth the wait. This single shows how Justin has matured in every way. From his deeper voice to the sultry lyrics and club-ready beat, this song made Beliebers fall in love with the young star all over again.
5.”We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift: This was her first single off ‘Red’ and instantly became a favourite for fans and critics alike with its catchy tune and kooky video. It kick-started what can only be described as Taylor Swift’s year. With her album ‘Red’ going three times platinum to a slew of catchy songs that vary from straight bubblegum pop to soulful rock, Taylor’s career will only continue to flourish!
4.”Some Nights” by fun.: fun. are considered the most inventive contemporary band and we find it difficult to disagree! Their breakthrough hit “We Are Young” caught everyone’s attention, but it’s with “Some Nights” that the band shows their personality and allowed audiences to get to know their style a bit better. With obvious tributes played to the timeless rock band, Queen, “Some Nights” was a glimpse at what is happening in music outside of the mainstream.
3.”Live While We’re Young” by One Direction: This year was all about One Direction and their dedicated fans. They dropped their second album to incredible sales, did a world tour and stole everyone’s hearts. Their first single off their new album perfectly summarizes the boys’ successful year. They’re young, talented, adorable and making the most of their time!
2.”Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen: This breakthrough hit by the homegrown singer-songwriter was initially meant to be a folk song. We’re glad Jepsen decided to try her hand at pop music instead because otherwise we would have missed out on one of the greatest and catchiest hits of the year!
1.”Gangnam Style” by Psy: This song came out of left field and blew the world away with its ridiculous video. Despite not understanding a word of this song, most people haven’t let the language barrier get in the way of enjoying the catchiest song of all time! Weather it’s the original you love or one of the many spoofs and parodies, this is one of those songs that just makes you smile.
