M is for…
Mothman
A tall (some witnesses guessed it to be 7 feet), man-like creature with glowing red eyes and wings spotted by different people in and around Point Pleasant, West Virginia, from November, 1966 and on. Some saw him from their kitchen windows, while others were chased in their cars at speeds of 100 mph by the winged creature. Sightings became grew less frequent after the collapse ofPoint Pleasant’sSilver Bridge a year later, where 46 people died. This led some to think that the Mothman had been there to warn of the impending doom. Others think the creatureitself caused the collapse.
Minsden Chapel
The Minsden Chapel near Hertfordshire, England, has beenin ruins for several hundred years, but that doesn’t stop the spirit of a monk from climbing a set of stairs that doesn’t exist anymore. Phantom church bells can be heard tolling, and a glowing cross has been seen to appear and just as suddenly disappear from a site onthe wall.
Maroussi Cemetery
This graveyard inGreece is guardedby the ghost of a young girl named Anna. If you drive by thecemetery, you can see her standing there crying, butupon second glance, she is gone.
Moaning Man
Lake DeSmet in Wyoming is avoided by Crow Indians because of their belief that a monster lurks there. The Crow Indians aren’t the only ones who have witnessed the “Moaning Man”: man and animal alike have been spooked by the ghost of this man, who, as his name indicates, moans as he rises from the lake to pull in his next victim.
Mussenden Temple
This library stands on the cliffs of Castlerock, Ireland. Reports have said that the floor pools with blood just to have it disappear minutes later.
Mount St. Mary’s College
Rev. Simon Brute, theschool’s president, will smile as he walks past you on school grounds: the only problem is that he died in 1839! It’s thought to be his spirit that knocks things off the shelves and walls of room 252. The ghost of a soldier, who died and was buried facedown in a well in nearby Gettysburg during the Civil War, also haunts the grounds. He approaches students and staff, taps them on the shoulder and begs them to “turn me over”. The scratching and tapping of fingers can be heard too on the windows and walls near the burial spot of a particular hand. Legend has it that it belonged to a slave who had it cut off for stealing. Some people even claim to have seen the hand itself.
