So, don’t know what to watch this weekend? Both SUCKER PUNCH and BEASTLY are out on DVD/Blu-Ray today, so we’ll walk you through the motions to help you figure out which one to get!
FAST PLOT:
BEASTLY: It’s a modernized story of the classic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ tale, starring Alex Pettyfer (I AM NUMBER FOUR) and Vanessa Hudgens (HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Series). Kyle (Pettyfer) is a vain, shallow teenager who’s completely wrapped up in outer apperances. But everything changes after Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), the school’s witch, makes his looks portray what he is on the inside. The only way to break the spell is to have someone love him for the ‘beast’ that he is (enter Vanessa Hudgens’ character).
SUCKER PUNCH: Taking place in the 60’s, it’s the story of a 20-year-old girl nicknamed ‘Babydoll’ (Emily Browning, A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS) who gets committed to a mental institution by her evil stepfather. Through her vivid imagination, she escapes reality into a world that she can control. With the help of four other patients (enter Vanessa Hudgens’ character), the girls come together to try and find a way to escape, while the lines between imagination and the real world become blurry.
PROS AND CONS:
BEASTLY
Pros: Teaches a valuable lesson about how people should perceive outer exterior, and it’s been a while since we’ve seen M-K Olsen in anything. Also, Neil Patrick Harris plays the blind tutor.
Cons: Sappy and Predictable. Belle, Gaston and Mrs. Potts did it better.
SUCKER PUNCH
Pros: Stunning visuals with great CGI, and a refreshingly unique plot line. Also, it appeals to both genders, where as BEASTLY will probably only want to be seen by girls.
Cons: Despite being unique, the story’s a little lame. And unlike BEASTLY, it will make you feel more self conscious than ever.
