Starring Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Cloris Leachman, Catherine Keener and Clark Duke
Directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco
Even though it’s set in the pre-historic times, the Croods might not differ much from any family today. We’ve got the over-protective father Grug, caring mother Ugga, clumsy brother Thunk, aggressive baby Sandy, feisty grandma Granand rebellious teen daughter Eep. However, this family has adopted a motto: “Fear is good, change is bad.” So when the world around them starts crashing down, the Croods are forced to try new things and change their way of living. They meet Guy, a teenage boy who’s got ideas and teaches them about fire and shoes; inventions that the Croods have never seen before. But with the world crumbling around them, will the Croods evolve fast enough to survive?
The actors did a great job with the voice overs. Nicolas Cage was very enthusiastic with his caveman growls and Emma Stone’s feisty voice matched Eep’s empowered attitude. And to quote director Chris Sanders on Ryan Reynold’s performance, “He gave Guy a mix of aloofness and frenetic charm.”
The environment creation was inspired by the Zion National Park in Utah. You’ll see many hybrid animals in this movie such as the “Bear Owl” and the “Mousephant”. These are all very cute… until they unleash their main attacks of defence!
Along with the beautiful animations, the music complemented the scenes very well. Film composer Alan Silvestri never fails to impress and along with the University of Southern California Marching Band, they provided the emotional background instrumentals to enhance the scenes. The most popular song in the soundtrack would have to be “Shine Your Way” by Owl City and Yuna. If you haven’t heard it yet, click here to check it out.
