Another episode of THE NEXT STEP means things are shaking up once again at the Next Step Dance Studio!
Kate announces that A Troupe will compete in a small competition on the weekend. This will help prepare them for regionals and get the dancers used to being on stage again. Kate also announces that she and Chris will decide the lineup positions. This is usually the Dance Captain’s responsibility, but since there is tension in the studio, Kate decides it would be best for her and Chris to decide to ensure fairness. Emily fights back arguing that her team won’t trust her and take her seriously if she’s stripped of this responsibility. Kate decides to let her choose the positions.
Daniel is choreographing the J Troupe for a competition that they will have on the weekend as well. One of the rules of the E-Girls is to never let anyone look too good. Tiffany takes this into account and tells Daniel that she once choreographed J Troupe and they were a nightmare. Daniel gets scared about what he’s going to do.
During Emily’s auditions for the line positions, Riley stumbles and forgets her steps. Michelle puts on a great performance and the other dancers are sure she’ll be in the front row.
After the auditions, Emily tells everyone that she’s going to talk with Kate and Chris to confirm the lineup. However, that’s not what’s doing at all. But of course, the rest of the Troupe doesn’t know that.
Riley is placed in the front row and Michelle is placed in the back row. Emily gives Riley that spot because she is her sister. During their first run in their positions, Riley struggles being in the front for the first time because there’s no one in front of her that she can follow. She firmly believes that she and Michelle should switch places.
Meanwhile, Daniel goes to J Troupe to begin rehearsals. Keeping in mind what Tiffany told him earlier, he is nervous and it shows. And it doesn’t help that the kids are being difficult to work with! Turns out it was Tiffany who told them to act that way, telling them that they would be able to perform for A Troupe if they listened to her. After Daniel’s had enough, Tiffany comes into the studio and makes the dancers listen to Daniel. Things go great after that!
During a break in between rehearsal, Riley talks to James, asking him his opinion on whether she should be in the front row. She knows he will give him an honest answer, and he says no. Riley talks to Kate about the lineup, where she learns that Emily never told Kate her decision. With this news, Riley goes to Emily, telling her that the lineup is wrong and she and Michelle should be switched. This does not make Emily happy.
When rehearsals are back on, Riley pushes Michelle to her spot at the front. Riley takes Michelle’s spot at the back. Riley tells the whole Troupe that Emily chose the positions by herself without Kate and Chris’ approval. The dancers stand up to Emily saying that Riley is right. When Kate sees Michelle in the front, she tells Emily, “Good job on moving Michelle to the front.”
Even though she followed her heart and did what was right, Riley gets voted out of the E-Girls because her interests lie outside the group. Emily doesn’t want her in the group as well. Riley leaves the studio in tears, not knowing what will happen next within the studio.
